Textile quotas leave stores facing crisis

British retailers could face a shortage of bras, T-shirts and men's trousers because of restrictions on Chinese textile imports, a trade organisation warned today.
The British Retail Consortium blamed the introduction of a new quota system in June, which followed a surge of Chinese clothes into the EU.

Because of the new arrangements, several of the 2005 quotas are already full, meaning more than £50m of Chinese-made clothing has been blocked from coming into the UK and is being held at ports and airports across Europe, the BRC said.
