Power of a half-naked woman

News - Ottawa Citizen, Canada

Provocative ads target female consumers
Never underestimate the power of a half-naked woman, especially when appealing to other women.

Such is the mantra of today's advertising world, where marketers promoting female-oriented products aren't getting inside a woman's psyche but rather into her lingerie drawer.

Over the past month, companies as diverse as Victoria's Secret, Gap and Dove have launched Internet and television campaigns featuring women in various stages of undress. While the efforts are disparate in both direction and purpose, each uses some form of boobvertising to catch the female consumer's attention.

"It's not surprising that sexual appeals have an impact in attracting our attention the way they do with men," says Ontario author Shari Graydon, who wrote In Your Face: The Culture of Beauty and You. "But obviously, (a woman's) relationship with those images is much more complicated."

CBI demands interest rate cute

News - Industry word and mouth, UK

Demands have been made by the British Retail Consortium to urgently cut interest rates. Sir Digby JOnes head of CBI employers' group has echoed the BRC's argument that the time for action is now.

Sir Digby's call came in the wake of shocking figures from the trades survey that sales have slumped to their lowest level since its survey began in 1983.

Some 42 per cent of retailers polled in the CBI's June survey said their sales had fallen compared to last year with 23 per cent reporting turnover has improved. The gap of minus 19 per cent translates into the industry's worst performance for 22 years.

The Bank of England's monetary policy committee which sets interest rates is due to meet very soon.

Big knickers to beaver cut

The Underwear Drawer - stories from a lingerieholic

A trip to Los Angeles is needed now as the new buzz word is “beaver cut” with larger knickers than g-strings back in fashion it appears pubic hair is also making a comeback. I should add styled pubic hair is making a comeback not the old fashion untrimmed bush!

On the west coast of the USA it seems for a trim down below you simple go in and pick a number. Make like finding a style of hair for your head like the Rachel years ago. Now you pick a number from images of different designs for your neither region.

No 2 on the style chart is Playboy which is a full waxing underneath with sides really clean but a pretty little V instead of the Brazilian strip. This design has been created for Pamela Anderson. No 5 is the straight forward Brazilian which is currently asked for less as the small strip of hair can emphasis your hips.
Number 7 the butterfly is proving very popular at the moment. Although there are seasonal elements to the job as Cindee Esser-Thorin owner of Pinks Cheeks in the USA points out, Christmas trees decorated with rhinestones and glitter are very popular in December.

Decoration down under is clearly the next big thing and in London Toni Jade will come to your house to put faux diamonds on your fingers and toes – and if you wish other parts..

The trend is from brutal wax jobs to keeping it bushy but trimmed. Look out for a beaver cutting shop near you.

Old lovers and like old bras

The Underwear Drawer - stories from a lingerieholic

You know you shouldn’t have them close to your skin again; however you seem to be unable to stop yourself. The charm and the allure over power your senses while you crave the familiar smell and warmth.

The old can feel snug and comforting for a while however the reason they were tossed away in the first place starts to show through, rubbing on your skin and causing an irritation. On the reunion the previous tension and sharp edges seems to have soften or disappeared. However these feelings do not last long, the fuzzy feeling is quickly replaced with un-comfort and this time you are more cautious and sensitive.

The old bra will never feel the same; the wire is poking through the material scrapping and pinching the skin at any given chance. The material is too fragile to mend it is time to clear out the old and make room for the new.

Bras for a cause: Exhibit, raffle benefit breast cancer

News - Traverse City Record-Eagle

ALDEN - Thirty artists, one cause - and a size 36C.
That's what it took to create the 2005 "A Way to Women's Wellness ArtBra Exhibition" making its way to Alden next week. The show, July 20-24 at the Spencer Creek House next to The Muffin Tin, features embellished crazy-quilted and pieced bras designed by nationally known artists including Kathleen Glynn of Antrim County.

With names like "Aphrodite's Wedding Bodice," "Got Milk?" and "Texas Double Barrel Slingshot," the bras are helping to raise money for breast cancer research. The project is the creation of international author, teacher, designer and lecturer Victoria Adams Brown, who has been featured in several major magazines and on The Discovery Channel show "Home Matters."

After seeing a magazine ad for a bra decorated with star sequins, Adams Brown decided to challenge her artist friends to do better. She gave them each a store-bought bra and asked them to embellish it in their own style. The designers also were asked to name their design, and to create a mythical story about who might have worn it.

LINGERIE SHOW SHOCKS FASHIONISTAS

News - Star of Mysore, India

Italy: When budding designer Valeria Marini asked to show her new lingerie and swimwear collection at the prestigious AltaRoma fashion show last week, the organisers agreed, but had some reservations.

Marini's show is based on scenes in the Tom Cruise / Nocole Kidman film Eyes Wide Shut. She had employed director Luca Tommasini to choreograph 18 models wearing, well, not very much. The effect was stunning, but AltaRoma President, Stefano Dominella, was not amused. 'Your show is like a porno film', he told Marini, threatening to expel her from Rome fashion week.

But peace was made as the more audacious outfits were covered with fur coats and feathers and the performance toned down.

National Underwear Day

News - freshpair.com , USA

From Marlon Brando rending his undershirt in Streetcar, to the sexual revolution, to Helmut Newton's lingerie-clad vamps, underwear has come a long way from being coyly referred to as "unmentionables" in American culture. A watershed event was the unveiling of Calvin Klein's giant underwear billboard ads in Times Square in the Eighties - a statement of unflinching exposure that almost single-handedly transformed the public's perception of underwear from 'necessary undergarment' to a brazen gesture of style and freedom.

Underwear for breast cancer patients

News - Wales, UK

High street giant Marks and Spencer is looking at introducing a new underwear range for women who have had breast cancer surgery.

The retailer yesterday announced the move, which is said to be in its early stages, in response to requests from customers.

One woman wrote to M&S chief executive Stuart Rose stating, "You don't realise, you cannot buy a matching bra and knickers set if you've lost a breast.

"Why can't you do that for us?"

The new range, which could take up to 12 months to develop, is expected to be an extension of the company's existing range for women who have had surgery and mastectomies. M&S head of lingerie design, Soozie Jenkinson, said the idea was a "natural progression".

Communist Underwear Proves the Latest Art Hit!

Art news - paintingsdirect.com, Russia

Communist underwear - however drab and unattractive - is now being celebrated as art. Soviet-style lines have been forming outside a Moscow museum as crowds have flocked there eager to study Communist panties, bras, corsets and pantyhose in intimate detail.

The "Memory of the Body Exhibition of Under-Fashions in the Communist Era" proved so popular when it was shown earlier this year at the National History Museum in St Petersburg, that it has now moved to Moscow's Central House of Artists.

Bras now designed for girls growing up fast

News - Alert Net

NEW YORK, July 3 (Reuters) - As parents lament that children grow up too quickly, lingerie companies are spotting an opportunity to market bras especially for younger girls.

Companies like Sara Lee Corp., whose brands include Bali, Hanes Her Way and Playtex, and privately held Maidenform Inc. have made a major investment in this area in the past few years.

Indeed, some large department stores have started to train their employees that one of their responsibilities will involve bra fittings for "first timers."

"They're either so shy and embarrassed that they'd rather be anywhere but in (the intimate apparel) department, or they're so proud and enthused about being a grown-up that they choose something totally inappropriate," said Beverley Hinkson, national bra fitting specialist at JC Penney .

Hinkson, who has been fitting customers with bras and training sales associates to do the same for the past eight years, said first-time customers are coming in at increasingly younger ages.

"It's usually their mother's idea to come in for a fitting," she added.
