Dolce & Gabbana - the guys who got the girls to get their bras out

While Madonna was redefining the modern female body — Marilyn Monroe breasts, a shot-putter’s musculature — Dolce and Gabbana gave her something to wear that showcased her new rock-hard femininity. Having popularised the corset in the late 1980s, they went one further in the 1990s and put the bra on show — not with the burlesque theatricality that Jean Paul Gaultier had borrowed from Yves Saint Laurent several years earlier, when he put Madonna in conical basques, but in an altogether more accessible, wearable way. D&G made the bra integral to the dress, then turned the straps into a focal point. The results looked like a beautiful, erotic mistake, as if a woman had somehow got dressed in too much of a hurry, her luscious, unkempt hair suggesting that maybe she hadn’t even had time to glance in the mirror.
